J-Hope, a member of the global sensation BTS, has officially completed his mandatory military service. On Thursday, October 17, J-Hope (born Jung Ho-seok) was discharged after serving 18 months at a military base in Wonju, Gangwon province. The 30-year-old singer, dancer, and rapper became the second BTS member to finish his military duties, following his bandmate Jin, who completed his service in June.
Upon his discharge, J-Hope was greeted with cheers from around 100 fans and reporters, as well as a warm embrace from Jin, who brought a giant bouquet of flowers to celebrate his friend’s return. Smiling in his military uniform, J-Hope expressed gratitude to his fans, saying, "Thanks to the fans, I was able to finish [military service] safely, with good health."
Reflecting on his time in the military, J-Hope acknowledged the dedication of his fellow soldiers, adding, "A lot of soldiers are working hard, dedicating themselves, and doing so much to protect the country."
J-Hope Thanks the Citizens of Wonju
In addition to thanking BTS’ passionate fanbase, known as ARMY, J-Hope also expressed appreciation to the citizens of Wonju for their support throughout his service. "During my 18 months of military service, I performed duties as an instructor and marched a lot, so I saw many Wonju citizens," he said. "I want to thank the citizens who greeted and cheered for the soldiers. It was very touching."
BTS’ Hiatus and Plans to Reunite in 2025
BTS went on hiatus in 2022 to allow its members to focus on solo projects and complete their mandatory military service. With both J-Hope and Jin now finished with their military duties, fans are eagerly anticipating the group’s return in 2025, when all seven members are expected to reunite.
Videos of J-Hope and Jin’s joyful reunion quickly circulated online, with ARMY sharing clips of the two bandmates laughing and embracing. Fans were especially amused by Jin’s impromptu gag during J-Hope’s statement to the press, in which he bent down to hold a cluster of press microphones while his bandmate spoke.
Jin’s Upcoming Solo Album: Happy
The reunion between J-Hope and Jin came just one day after Jin announced details of his debut solo album, titled Happy, which is scheduled for release on November 15. The six-song mini-album will feature the focus track "Running Wild," as well as a pre-release single titled "I’ll Be There." The album will also include tracks such as "Another Level," "Falling," "Heart on the Window" (feat. WENDY), and "I Will Come to You."
As BTS continues its hiatus, both J-Hope and Jin’s respective projects have kept fans engaged, building anticipation for the group’s highly anticipated return in 2025.
